The architectural design of the Flourish Development in Khor Al Raha, Abu Dhabi has been guided by the use of the ‘finger plan’. The finger plan moves away from traditional single block residential developments and has been used to inform the plan, built form and material use of both buildings.
Departing from typical developments which differentiate between a podium and tower components, the finger plan and associated architectural form is allowed to cascade to canal level, concealing car parking, activating the canal promenade, and effectively dissolving the podium. The overall aesthetic is akin to tumbling block forms stepping their way down to the canal. There is a chaotic charm to the composition, like a picturesque mountain village, greatly reinforced when both buildings are viewed together as a whole.
Overall the architectural design of both buildings presents an efficient contemporary design solution which is truly place specific yet acknowledges an existing local vernacular.
